STEM WEEKLY UPDATE ~ FEBRUARY 2013

MONDAY 02/04

3rd Grade- Goal: Rubber Band Car Worksheet Completion

The third grade worked all day today fixing and completing their Rubber Band Car worksheets.  This worksheet served as a tool for them to communicate what they learned about rubber band cars and how it was alike and different from the balloon car project.

4th Grade- Goal: Skimmer design Challenge Continued

The fourth grade continued to move through the design and record process and each class time this week began with a review of the 4 fundamental forces, potential/kinetic energies, constants vs. variables, record keeping directions, and surface area calculations.  I also asked open ended questions to get them thinking about their designs and to help them make hypotheses to test for the day hopefully bringing them closer to understanding and staying focused on the goal of getting their sail to perform in the most optimal way.

TUESDAY 02/05

3rd Grade- Goal: Introduction to Maglevs

The third grade received an overview of what Maglevs are and the basic concept behind them.  In this overview we discussed how Maglevs got their name (Magnetic Levitation) and what this has to do with the project we will be doing in STEM.  They started on a vocabulary worksheet, see tomorrow for explanation.

4th Grade- Goal: Skimmer Design Challenge Continued

Today the fourth grade worked through the design process with their sails, as well as working on better recording skills.  The recording process is important to the communication and understanding of a project.  The children are learning that it takes time and patience to get the job done right the first time.  This will be a week long process of moving through the design process while recording.  The process will look like this: designing, recording, testing, recording, “tweeking”, recording, re-testing, recording, so on and so forth.

WEDNESDAY 02/06

3rd Grade- Goal: Understanding Maglevs and How They Work

Today the third grade continued to use a project worksheet that will help guide them through the project and keep all their information handy and organized.  The concept behind how Maglevs work contains quantum physics among other areas of comprehension.  In order to teach these difficult concepts to third graders, in a way they can follow, build, and understand, I developed this worksheet that incorporates learning the concepts while writing definitions to strategically organized and important vocabulary words.  The worksheet/project will end in a culmination of questions they are to answer to show what they have learned during the project.

4th Grade- Goal: Skimmer Design Challenge Continued

Today the fourth grade continued the processes they have been working on all week; this will continue until all students have designed a minimum of two sails and conducted a minimum of six tests.

THURSDAY 02/07

3rd Grade- Goal: Understanding Maglevs Continued

Through today the third grade covered these vocabulary words/concepts: Maglev, Friction, Guideway, Aerodynamic, Magnet, Attraction, Repulsion, Magnetic Field, Electromagnet, and Permanent Magnet

4th Grade- Goal: Skimmer Design Challenge Continued

Today the fourth grade continued the processes they have been working on all week; this will continue until all students have designed a minimum of two sails and conducted a minimum of six tests.
